Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a lesser known field of medicine, in comparison to well known fields such as cardiology and plastic surgery. According to the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, physical medicine, and rehabilitation physicians, otherwise known as physiatrists, perform a variety of roles.  Known to take care of both muscles, bone, and nerves, they can provide pain-alleviating treatments for patients with common complaints including back pain. They can also perform duties such as assessing for disability, impairment, and post injury related trauma. A PMR physician can be an important asset to any organization, as each physician works closely with other physicians, including neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and primary care physicians. They also work with other members of the medical team, including physical therapists and occupational therapists. 

PMR physicians enjoy several treatment modalities to choose from when treating patients. Some of these include, but are not limited to, nerve conduction studies, ultrasound guided procedures, injections of the spine, osteopathic treatment, orthotics, as well as disability assessments. 

In terms of people attracted to the field, the work hours are not as hectic as a busy primary care physician and thus, many medical students are attracted to the field. When looking for a PMR physician, it is important to inquire about their willingness to work either full or part time.
